Why a missed day is not a failed habit

Most trackers reset your streak to zero the morning after you miss a day. That design quietly teaches the wrong lesson: that one bad day erases thirty good ones. It doesn’t. The best-known study on habit formation — Lally and colleagues at UCL, who followed people for twelve weeks — found that missing a single opportunity did not measurably affect whether the habit formed. What breaks habits is quitting after the lapse.

That’s why a missed day here looks different from an empty day, but your streak survives it. The number you’re growing counts the days you showed up, not the days you were perfect. Miss once, mark the next day, and the picture keeps building. Miss twice in a row and the count starts again — not as punishment, but because at that point it is honestly a new run.
