Fifteen minutes and the tidy-up problem

Cleaning has no natural end. A room is never finished — there is always one more surface, one more drawer, one more thing that belongs somewhere else. That is what makes it exhausting: not the effort, but the missing finish line.

A fifteen-minute timer supplies the finish line the task refuses to have. You are not cleaning the kitchen; you are cleaning the kitchen for fifteen minutes. When it rings, the job is done by definition, whatever the kitchen looks like.

It also stops the opposite failure — the Saturday that disappears into deep-cleaning a cupboard nobody opens. Fifteen minutes is long enough to make a visible difference to a room and short enough that you can do it before leaving the house.
